Rays Take 3-2 ALCS Lead With 3-1 Game 5 Win Over Guardians

The Tampa Bay Rays are one win from the World Series. Behind seven strong innings from Drew Rasmussen, Tampa Bay beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 on Sunday night at Progressive Field to take a 3-2 lead in the American League Championship Series.

The Rays scored single runs in each of the first three innings and never let go. Cleveland managed just five hits all night, and two of them belonged to Steven Kwan, whose glove also saved the Guardians twice in the field.

Rasmussen Deals Again

Rasmussen allowed one run on four hits over seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts. He retired nine straight after Chase DeLauter’s first-inning single and threw 21 of his 27 changeups for strikes, a big jump from his Game 1 outing.

He is now 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in three postseason starts, striking out 23 and walking three. Since the ALCS expanded to a best-of-seven in 1985, road teams that won Game 5 for a 3-2 lead have gone on to win the series four of five times.

Bryan Baker worked a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the postseason, converting his 35th straight save chance.

Game 6 Tonight: Peralta Against a Bullpen

The series shifts back to Tropicana Field for Game 6 on Monday at 8:08 p.m. ET on TBS. Tampa Bay starts right-hander Freddy Peralta, acquired in August and pitching his best ball of the season. Cleveland will go with a bullpen game, holding ace Gavin Williams for a potential Game 7 rather than starting him on three days’ rest.

The Guardians burned their high-leverage arms trying to keep Game 5 close, and there is no travel day between games, which puts their relief corps under real strain.

Game 7, if needed, is Tuesday. The World Series starts Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers, who have been resting since sweeping the NLCS on October 15.

What It Means for Bettors

With the Rays holding a 3-2 lead at home, the series market leans their way, but the Game 6 pitching mismatch cuts both ways. Peralta against a Cleveland bullpen game is a matchup Tampa Bay should win, yet bullpen games can neutralize platoon edges and keep totals lower than expected.

Angles to watch: the Rays’ bullpen is fresh after Rasmussen went seven, Baker is locked in at the back, and Cleveland’s path to a Game 7 requires winning twice on the road with Gavin Williams as the last bullet. World Series futures against a rested Milwaukee club will move fast once this series ends, so early position on the Rays has value before a Game 6 clinch.
