World Series Liability: Sportsbooks Lose No Matter Who Wins Brewers vs. Rays
The 2026 World Series is a futures bettor’s dream and a sportsbook’s nightmare. The Tampa Bay Rays opened the season at 80-to-1 and the Milwaukee Brewers at 35-to-1 at DraftKings, the 22nd and 14th choices out of 30 teams. Now the two longest-shot survivors are playing for a championship starting Friday in Milwaukee, and the books are facing a payout no matter who lifts the trophy.
How the books built this liability
When a team sits at 80-to-1, it does not take many wagers for liability to pile up fast. As both clubs kept winning, bettors piled on at prices that look absurd now. ESPN reported that sportsbooks started sweating both teams long before the World Series was set.
“The Brewers are still a loss for the house overall on the World Series futures,” Caesars head of baseball Eric Biggio told ESPN. He added that Milwaukee helped the house on a game-to-game basis against the Dodgers and by knocking out the Padres, who were themselves a major futures liability. Small comfort: the futures book still bleeds.
Every operator’s math is different
BetMGM reports Milwaukee as a loss on its futures book while a Rays title would be a win for the house. At Hard Rock Bet, Florida’s only authorized online sportsbook, the split cuts both ways: 21.2% of in-state World Series tickets are on Tampa Bay compared with 7.7% elsewhere, but Brewers backers are wagering more than double the average Rays bet. “We’ve seen a significant late surge in World Series money on Milwaukee, but Tampa Bay remains a major liability for us,” spokesperson Jon Chapper said.
The price with Game 1 on Friday
Milwaukee is a -160 series favorite with Tampa Bay at +140. Game 1 goes Friday at 8 p.m. ET at American Family Field on FOX, with the Brewers -164 on the moneyline, the Rays +135, and the total at 6 runs. Drew Rasmussen starts for Tampa Bay against Jacob Misiorowski. This is the first World Series since 1980 in which both clubs are chasing their first championship, and a Rays title would tie the 1991 Minnesota Twins as the longest preseason long shot to ever win it all, per SportsOddsHistory.com.
What It Means for Bettors
Holding a Rays ticket at 80-to-1? This is the textbook hedge spot: Milwaukee at -160 lets you lock in profit regardless of the outcome, and FanDuel has shown the Brewers as short as -172, so shop the number. If you believe in the underdog, +140 on Tampa Bay is the last chance to get a plus-money price on a team that just keeps surviving. Either way, compare lines across BetOnline, Bovada, and MyBookie before you lock anything in.
