NFL Week 8 Recap: Lions End Vikings Perfect Run, Broncos Stun Chiefs at the Goal Line

Sunday, November 1, changed the shape of the NFL season. The last unbeaten team lost, the AFC West got a new leader, and a Sunday night blowout pushed one contender further into crisis. For bettors, Week 8 was a reminder that reputation fades fast in November.

The unbeaten run ends in Detroit

The Detroit Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings 19-15 at Ford Field, handing Minnesota its first loss of the season. Detroit trailed late, then Jared Goff found Jameson Williams for a seven yard touchdown with 4:35 left. Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 153 yards and a touchdown, including a 30 yard score in the third quarter.

The Vikings fall to 6-1, while the Lions improve to 5-2 and have won three straight. Minnesota still leads the NFC North, but Detroit has closed the gap.

Broncos take the AFC West at the goal line

The Denver Broncos beat the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 after trailing 24-13 in the fourth quarter. Bo Nix threw two fourth down touchdown passes, and Jonah Coleman scored the go ahead touchdown with 1:56 left. Kansas City then drove to the Denver 1 yard line, but Malcolm Roach sacked Patrick Mahomes on the final play.

Denver improves to 6-2 and moves into first place in the AFC West, while Kansas City falls to 5-2 with a second straight loss. Mahomes threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns, but the Chiefs were stopped at the goal line when it mattered most.

Sunday night statement in Washington

The Washington Commanders beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 on Sunday Night Football. Washington shut out Philadelphia over the final three quarters, sacked Tanner McKee five times, and got 217 passing yards and a touchdown from Jayden Daniels. The Commanders improve to 2-4-1, while the Eagles fall to 2-6 with a sixth straight loss.

The market will need to see real improvement before the Eagles deserve short prices again.

Around the Week 8 scoreboard

Other finals included Buffalo 36, Baltimore 10; Cincinnati 43, Tennessee 36 in overtime; Jacksonville 42, Indianapolis 7; Arizona 33, Dallas 30 in overtime; Las Vegas 38, New York Jets 33; and Los Angeles Rams 24, Los Angeles Chargers 9. Joe Burrow led the Bengals with 462 passing yards, five touchdown passes, and a rushing touchdown in overtime.

What It Means for Bettors

Week 8 rewarded bettors who trusted recent form over preseason reputation. Detroit, Denver, and Washington all won by playing to a clear identity, while Minnesota, Kansas City, and Philadelphia lost when their weaknesses showed up late. As Week 9 lines open, compare numbers across books before you bet, because early lines after a wild Sunday often overreact. Look for value on teams whose play is better than their record, and be careful laying points with teams winning on reputation alone.
